Homes shown as featured in the Advocate - most recent 1st

In the spotlight this week is the home of Bob and Jean Petrushewsky at 73 Sylvia St. in Mitchell.

This 1 year old open plan bungalow was built by Willowgrove Developments. The home is Energy Star certified with soundproofing in the completely finished basement. The homeowners were assisted by Interior Decorator Pauline Hartfiel with their design choices, and Josh Nahrgang, who helped customize the home design. As part of Home Tour 2010, Mitchell Optimists and Community Outreach are featuring a draw for a beautiful queensize quilt. Quilting was done compliments of a group of local ladies and we thank them very much for this. Draw tickets are available at the Villa, or from Optimist members, with the draw taking place Saturday, September 25th at 2:00PM at the Villa.

The MITCHELL OPTIMISTS recently presented

INTERNET SAFETY

EDUCATION FOR ADULTS.

.   Our guest speaker, O.P.P. Constable Wijnands, spoke about some of the things we and our youth can see and do on the internet and be safe online.  The Optimist Organization has recognized the need to educate the youth and adults in our communities. The goal of Optimist Clubs has always been to help children, and bringing Internet Safety to the forefront gives us another opportunity to do so. Safety guidelines and products are helpful but do not take the place of parents talking openly to children about things they may experience online.

When talking with your child, be positive. The Internet can be a fun, exciting place and a valuable tool for your child. While you do not need to be overly graphic, you should make children aware of the potential risks that are out there.

SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS WITH CHILDREN USING THE INTERNET

** Keep the family computer in a common room where your child’s activities are visible to parents**

**Know what your child likes to do online and ask questions about his/her online activities. Familiarize yourself with the Internet. Know the programs that your children are using. Be a “friend” on your child’s facebook page**

 **Know who communicates with your child online. Sit with your child at the computer and have him/her tell you the real-life identities of every person on their buddy lists or profiles. Reinforce that people online are not always who they say they are**

**Explain how risky it can be to give out personal information (addresses, phone numbers, e-mail)

**Encourage your children to tell a trusted adult if they see something that makes them feel uncomfortable, scared, or confused online. **

** Talk to children about not responding to offensive or dangerous communications, e-mails, or chats. Report any such communication to local law enforcement. Do not delete the evidence; turn off the monitor and contact local law enforcement. Also report such instances to the CyberTipline.**

**Filtering ** is a parenting tool that allows parents to block obscene or illegal content from your computer. For information on filters go to www.iKeepSafe.org/filters

This was a very informative meeting.  Constable Wynands gave handouts with excellent information and there is also a website with great information;

Be sure to look at    www.cybertip.ca

This is "Canada's National Tipline for reporting the online sexual exploitation of children"
